Why use this instead of a calculator? What's the difference?

Diablo 2, and like most computer programs have only a limited amount of possibilites that can happen. You probably know you cannot find a Ber Rune in Normal Act 1, but it's not so obvious that you also can't ever find an Ohm Rune and a Ber Rune from the same chest. When loot drops in the game, a series of calculations occur that involve the documented odds that drop calculators use, but also some intricate inner workings of the software code. This emulator includes both those odds, and the inner workings. Drop calculators ignore the very inner workings of Diablo 2. d2emu also let's you see what the actual drops will look like, which is pretty fun.

Does this work for online/Battle.net?

No. Not at this time, but maybe stay tuned? The way randomization works is different online than it is for single player.

Can you predict if the green amulet is Tal Rasha or Angelic? How about if the unique ring is an SOJ?

No. The chain of random numbers used for dropping the item is different from the chain used to give an item stats. This means the stats, and if it's an SOJ or a Manald is essentially a separate dice roll from dropping the items.

Is this using a lot of my computer's memory or CPU?

No. It's all running on my server.
