📖 Overview

The Secret Cow Level (officially "Moo Moo Farm") has been a beloved part of Diablo II since the original game. What started as a joke about a rumored secret level in Diablo I became an actual farming destination packed with hundreds of Hell Bovines wielding halberds.

When this zone becomes terrorized, the already dense cow population receives level boosts, making it an excellent farming destination for both experience and loot - though with some important caveats.

Monster Density Comparison

Cow Level
MAXIMUM
Chaos Sanctuary

The Pit

Travincal
Low

🐄 Why Farm the Cow Level?

  • Unmatched Density: Hundreds of cows per map - nothing else comes close
  • AoE Paradise: Builds with area damage destroy entire screens instantly
  • Rune Farming: High kill count = many drop chances = good for rune hunting
  • Base Items: Excellent for finding white/grey items for runeword bases
  • Fun Factor: Something uniquely satisfying about exploding cow herds

⚠️ Important Considerations

  • Lower Exp Per Monster: Individual cows give less experience than Chaos/WSK monsters
  • Open Layout: No walls mean enemies can surround you from all directions
  • Getting Surrounded: If you stop moving, you will get swarmed
  • Lower Treasure Class: Base area level 81 is lower than alvl 85 zones

🚪 How to Access the Cow Level

Opening the Portal

  1. Complete the Game: Kill Baal on the difficulty you want to create the portal (Normal/Nightmare/Hell)
  2. Get Wirt's Leg: Go to Tristram (via Cairn Stones in Stony Field) and click on Wirt's corpse in the top-left area
  3. Get a Tome of Town Portal: Buy from Akara or any Act vendor - must have charges remaining
  4. Use the Horadric Cube: Place Wirt's Leg + Tome of Town Portal in the Cube, then Transmute
  5. Enter the Portal: A red portal appears in the Rogue Encampment (Act 1). Enter to access the Cow Level

📋 Important Notes About Access

  • D2R Change: Killing the Cow King NO LONGER prevents you from making portals! This was changed from original D2.
  • One Portal Per Game: You can only create one Cow Level portal per game
  • Difficulty Matters: Must have killed Baal on that difficulty with that character
  • Party Access: If someone else opens the portal, you can enter even if you haven't killed Baal

👹 Monster Information

Monster Type Immunities (Hell) Notes
Hell Bovine Demon None (Standard) Main population - no immunities, easy to kill
Hell Bovine (Unique/Champion) Demon Lightning or Cold (Random) Elite cows can spawn with random immunities
The Cow King Super Unique Lightning Found with his pack somewhere on the map - Lightning Enchanted

Combat Characteristics

  • Damage Type: Physical melee (halberds)
  • Speed: Relatively slow movement, but pack together
  • HP: Moderate - melts to AoE but not trivial 1-hit kills
  • Behavior: Aggressive, will swarm your position
  • Sound: "Moo" - hundreds of simultaneous moos

💡 The Cow King

  • Super Unique boss found somewhere on the map
  • Drops the Cow King's Leathers set pieces
  • Lightning Enchanted - be careful of lightning bolts on death
  • In D2R, killing him does NOT prevent future cow level access

📊 Experience Analysis

The Cow Level presents an interesting experience trade-off:

Factor Cow Level Chaos Sanctuary
Exp per Monster Lower (base level 81) Higher (base level 85)
Monster Count 300-400+ per map 150-200 per run
Clear Time 8-15 minutes (full) 4-8 minutes
Reset Speed Slower (portal creation) Faster (waypoint)
Terror Zone Boost Significant (brings to 96) Significant (brings to 96)

📈 When Cow Level Wins

  • Your Build Excels at AoE: Javazon, CE Necro, Nova Sorc can clear faster than they could clear Chaos
  • You're Rune Hunting: More kills = more chances, volume matters
  • You Want Bases: High volume of drops means finding eth bases, 4os items, etc.
  • Terror Zone is Active: The experience boost makes it competitive with Chaos

⚠️ When to Choose Other Zones

  • Pure Exp Optimization: Chaos Sanctuary still edges out most builds for exp/hour
  • Targeting Specific Uniques: alvl 85 zones can drop everything; Cow Level cannot
  • You're Playing Melee: Getting surrounded by 50 cows hurts

⚔️ Best Builds for Cow Level

The Cow Level heavily rewards area-of-effect damage. Builds that can hit many enemies simultaneously dominate here:

🏹
Lightning Javazon
Amazon
COW QUEEN

The absolute best cow farmer. Lightning Fury chains endlessly through packed herds, clearing entire screens with each throw. This is THE build for cow farming.

Strengths

  • Lightning Fury chains infinitely
  • One javelin can kill 50+ cows
  • Charged Strike melts Cow King

Weaknesses

  • Needs Infinity for immunes
  • No teleport for repositioning
💀
CE Necromancer
Necromancer
S-TIER

Corpse Explosion chains through the entire cow population. One corpse starts a chain reaction that clears the map. Extremely satisfying gameplay.

Strengths

  • CE chains through hundreds of cows
  • Safe with minion wall
  • Budget friendly

Weaknesses

  • Needs first corpse (slow start)
  • Army can block loot vision
❄️
Blizzard Sorceress
Sorceress
A-TIER

Blizzard covers large areas and freezes cows, preventing them from reaching you. Safe and effective, though not as fast as Javazon.

Strengths

  • Large AoE coverage
  • Freeze provides safety
  • Teleport for escape

Weaknesses

  • Cold immune elites
  • Cast delay on Blizzard
Nova Sorceress
Sorceress
A-TIER

Nova's 360-degree damage is perfect for being surrounded by cows. Teleport into herds, Nova spam, repeat.

Strengths

  • 360-degree instant damage
  • Perfect for surrounded situations
  • Very fast clear

Weaknesses

  • Close range = dangerous
  • High mana consumption
🔨
Hammerdin
Paladin
B-TIER

Works but not optimal. Hammers spiral outward which is less efficient than true 360 AoE in the open cow fields. Still viable.

Strengths

  • Magic damage = no immunes
  • Tanky with Holy Shield

Weaknesses

  • Spiral pattern less efficient here
  • Open layout hurts hammer coverage

🎯 Farming Strategy

Optimal Clearing Pattern

Enter and Establish Position

Upon entering, you'll be at the edge of the map. Immediately assess cow positions and plan your route. Some players clear the edge first, others push toward the center.

Herd the Cows

Movement attracts cows from all directions. Use this to your advantage - run through an area to gather cows into dense packs, then AoE them down together.

Keep Moving

Never stand still. Stationary characters get surrounded and killed. Constant movement keeps cows chasing you in manageable groups.

Work in Circles

Spiral pattern from edge to center, or vice versa. This ensures you don't miss pockets of cows hiding behind fences or trees.

Find the Cow King

The Cow King spawns somewhere random. He drops set pieces and can drop high runes. Worth finding and killing each run.

Survival Tips

⚠️ Staying Alive in the Cow Level

  • Never Stop Moving: The moment you stand still, 30 cows will surround you
  • Portal Placement: Put your town portal in a corner of the map, not the middle
  • Watch Your Back: Cows spawn everywhere - check behind you periodically
  • Escape Route: Always know where you can teleport/run to safety
  • Physical Resistance: All cow damage is physical - DR% and armor help

💡 Pro Tips

  • Skip Stragglers: Chasing lone cows wastes time - focus on dense packs
  • Terrain Use: Fences and trees can funnel cows into killzones
  • Full Clear Optional: If you've killed 80% of the map, consider restarting fresh
  • Loot Filter: So much drops that you need a good filter or you'll waste time checking

💰 Loot Expectations

Why People Farm Cows

High Runes
Volume approach - kill 400 cows, get many drop chances
Strategy: Quantity over quality
Runeword Bases
4os Monarch, Eth items, White Armors
Excellent source for bases
Cow King's Leathers
Set boots, gloves, helm
Only drops from The Cow King
Unique Items
Most uniques can drop (not all TC87)
alvl 81 limits some top items

📋 Note on Treasure Class

The Cow Level has an area level of 81 (96 when terrorized). This means some of the rarest items (TC87) like Tyrael's Might cannot drop here normally. However, when terrorized, the boosted monster levels CAN reach TC87, making this a more complete farming destination.
