Demonic influence drives desert insects into dense, hard-to-target swarms whose bites drain the stamina needed to escape. From a gameplay standpoint, Swarms have a special attack that drains Stamina. You cannot steal Mana or Life from the Swarm. Hell Swarms have a chance to deal Fire damage in Nightmare and Hell.
